Graduate training opportunities are routinely available in the laboratories of Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Program (RDSP) faculty. RDSP graduate students typically receive degrees through one of several interdisciplinary programs at Michigan State University or individual departments including:

Research into animal and human reproductive biology has widespread implications for human health. The Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Training Program (http://rdstp.canr.msu.edu/) or (http://rdsp.canr.msu.edu/) at Michigan State University trains young scientists to pursue research in Programmatic High Priority Topic Areas identified by the NICHD/Fertility and Infertility Branch and the Gynecologic Health and Disease Branch. Support for eligible Pre-doctoral trainees is available through a T32 award from NICHD.

Research training is available in the laboratories of our 14 Faculty Trainers who are based in both East Lansing and Grand Rapids. Our trainers are world-renowned for their research, and offer research opportunities in the latest cutting-edge research, using a variety of experimental model systems. There are 4 major areas of specialization:

  • Gonad, Gamete, & Embryo Biology
  • Developmental Genetics & Stem Cells
  • Women’s Health & Maternal-Maternal-Fetal Interactions
  • Reproductive Toxicology & Developmental Origins of Health and Disease

In addition the program also provides trainees with competencies in:

  • Hypothesis-driven Basic, Applied, Clinical, and Translational Research,
  • Use of a variety of model organisms in reproductive biology research
  • Cutting edge methodologies in developmental biology and embryology, molecular and cellular biology, reproductive physiology, genome editing, epigenetics, and bioinformatics/genomics biology
  • Skills for successful professional development, such as oral communication, grant writing, job interviewing skills, mentoring, laboratory management, alternate career awareness, intellectual property and entrepreneurship, and teaching.

Doctoral candidates will pursue degrees through one of the six Biomedical Sciences (BMS) programs (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Genetics, Pharmacology & Toxicology, and Physiology). Applicants should emphasize their preference for training opportunities in the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences.

Additional graduate programs that are also available include Animal Science and Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology. Dual degree candidates (MD/PhD and DO/PhD) also participate.
